US demands from Panama to prevent Iranian ships to use its flags

On March 13, US demanded Panamanian government to prevent Iranian ships to use its flag.

“Flying under the flag of Panama creates opportunities for Iran to avoid sanctions.” – told US Deputy Special Envoy for Iran, Abram Paley.

According to the information Panama, a small Central American country, allows shipping companies, including Iranian ships, to use its own flag for a fee and without any supervision.

“Iran and countries related to Iran are trying to avoid sanctions in Panama. They are using flag of Panama for their own purposes. At least 6 ships have used flag of Panama since January.”

It is worthy to note that Panama Maritime Authority is considered the largest organization in the field of ship registration.

After Panama was accused of cooperation with Iran, this country canceled the registrations of 136 ships in the registry related to the Iranian National Oil Company in the last 4 years.

US accuses Iran of providing financial support to terrorism around the world, including the Houthis, by using the flag of Panama to bypass sanctions and sell oil.
