However, Iran's profit from this cooperation can only be used for humanitarian purposes.

On March 14, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in the briefing: “According to the terms of the sanction waiver, no funds have been allowed to be transferred to Iran. For the first time in 2018, 21 sanctions have been waived for Iraq so far."

Matthew Miller added: “with the amounts held in a specific account, Iran can only use it to buy medicine, food, medical equipment, agricultural supplies, and other non-sanctioned purchases.”

He also spoke about the purpose of extending the sanction waiver: "this allows for the transfer of the debt due to the import of electricity from Iran from the Iraqi side to a bank account owned by Tehran in a third country."

According to the reports of Iraqi officials, it will take at least 2 years to get rid of the need to import gas and electricity from Iran.
