The new year has been declared “the Year of Urmia” in South Azerbaijan

The 1403 new solar year (from March 20), which started today at 6 o'clock in the morning in Iran, was named the Year of Urmia by South Azerbaijan activists.

A number of South Azerbaijani cultural activists issued a declaration titled "We declare 1403 the Year of Urmia" to Azerbaijanis.

This was declared: "The Turkish people, who built their community at the root of this glorious country, have lived in Urmia with their culture for centuries."

The declaration went on to emphasize that South Azerbaijan has historically been the homeland of Azerbaijani Turks.

Reminding those who were banished and made their home in the West Azerbaijan Province that Azerbaijan is a Turkish territory was said to have occurred: "Some settlers (meaning the land claimants) have drawn incorrect conclusions (because of the hospitality shown by the Azerbaijani Turks to non-locals in Urmia, in the cultural center of Azerbaijan)."

The declaration concluded with the following statement: "For the aforementioned reason, we call on all Azerbaijani Turks to unite around Urmia." We, as literary and artistic professionals, declare 1403 the Year of Urmia.
