According to local eco-activists, toxic industrial waste is flowing into the natural Shorabil Lake, which is one of Ardabil's attractions.

In addition to chemical industrial waste, medical waste from hospitals is also being dumped into the lake.

According to activists, the lake's aquatic life, as well as many seasonal and permanent bird species, have died.

It should be noted that Shorabil, Iran's only urban inland natural lake, is an important tourism destination in Ardabil province and holds special significance in terms of natural heritage.

The lake, located 3 kilometers south of the city, measures 1 kilometer in length, 500 meters in width, and covers 180 hectares. It is 1350 meters above sea level.

According to the results of geological research, Lake Shorabil, which is older than Lake Urmia, was included in the list of national monuments in June 2023.

Despite this, the proposed projects for the protection of the natural monument have not yet been implemented.
