The mandate of the UN special rapporteur and fact-finding committee on human rights in Iran has been extended

On April 6, the countries that are members of the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution that the special rapporteur of this organization on human rights in Iran and the mission of the United Nations Fact-Finding Committee agreed to extend for another year.

At its 55th session held in Geneva, the Human Rights Council voted on the draft resolution on the situation of human rights in Iran, and the resolution was finally approved with 24 positive votes, 8 negative votes and 15 abstentions.

The resolution invited the Iranian government to cooperate fully with the special rapporteur and the Fact-Finding Committee and to provide them with unfettered access to information necessary to carry out their duties.

This resolution requires Special Rapporteur Javaid Rehman to submit two reports to the General Assembly and the Human Rights Council, as well as the Fact-Finding Committee to submit a report to the Human Rights Council next March.

The resolution also requested that the United Nations Secretary-General provide the necessary resources to the special rapporteur and the Fact-Finding Committee.

It should be noted that in July 2018, Javaid Rehman was presented as the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran by the vote of the UN Human Rights Council.

His mandate has been extended twice, and with the latest resolution, he is appointed to perform this mission for the fourth time.
