Republican Senators question Biden about sanction waiver

According to the "Washington Free Beacon," a group of Republican senators on Wednesday launched an investigation into the Biden administration's decision to release up to $10 billion in frozen funds for the Iranian government.

The probe comes after the White House issued the third sanctions waiver to let Iraq pay Iran for electricity through non-Iraqi banks less than a month ago.

This decision by the White House allows the transfer of Iraqi electricity payments to Iranian bank accounts in Europe and Oman.

Led by Republican Senator Tim Scott, the group of 13 lawmakers is pressing the State and Treasury Departments for exactly how much money Iran will be permitted to access in the next several months.

The probe is backed by several Republican Senators including Ted Cruz, Tom Cotton, Marco Rubio.

The senators wrote in their appeal letter: "First, Biden's decision makes restricted Iranian funds more available to the Ayatollah's regime at a time when Iranian-backed aggression in the region is at its peak. Second, the decision suggests that the Biden administration is ignoring Congressional intent to severely limit any payments to Iran. If we want to achieve peace in the region, we need to move these funds away from Iran instead of making them available. Please explain why the administration has increased Iran's access to stable currency, particularly the euro, which is more valuable than local currencies such as the Iraqi dinar."

The Biden administration must also explain how it "is in the national security interest of the United States" to grant Iran fresh access to funds as it foments terrorism against the United States and its allies, chiefly Israel.

We should note that, Iranian proxy groups have increased their attacks in the region since Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7—with their attacks on American personnel in Jordan and vessels in the Red Sea.

CENTCOM Commander Gen. Erik Kurilla recently told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Iran remains undeterred in its support for Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis and is not paying a price for its nefarious activities in the region.
