South Azerbaijani activist was sentenced to lashing punishment

The 32nd division of the Court of Appeals of East Azerbaijan Province upheld the sentence of 9 months of imprisonment and 70 lashes issued by the first instance court against Ismail Heydari, South Azerbaijani eco-activist and labor movement activist.

On August 21, 2023, the activist was arrested and transferred to a detention center for protesting environmental destruction by mine operators and employee dismissal.

The activist faced charges of "insulting the saints," "inciting citizens to commit crimes against the country's internal and external security," "contacting opposition groups," "spreading false information," and "propaganda against the Islamic Republic."
