Iran took advantage of the tension to tighten hijab regulations

Iranian women are facing harsher crackdowns for refusing to wear the mandatory hijab in the midst of Iran's conflict with Israel.

While news of IRGC missile and drone operations against Israel over the weekend overshadowed other events, Iranian police began enforcing hijab regulations on women on Saturday as part of what they claim is a "national and public demand" in a new initiative known as the Noor plan, Persian for 'light'.

Morality police have also returned to the streets in full force, having been reduced since Mahsa Amini's death in 2022, with a stronger presence in Tehran's central districts, complete with police patrols, morality vans, and police motorcycle patrols.

Businesses that do not follow the regulations risk being shut down. Abbas Ali Mohammadian, Tehran's police chief, announced it, implying that Iran's women and girls will face even more oppression.

"The police in Tehran, as in other provinces, will implement their measures against this type of violation of the law regarding hijab, beginning today," he said on live television on Saturday.

"People who did not heed previous police warnings will be specially warned in the city starting today, and legal action will be taken against them," he added, just days after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that women in the Islamic republic must follow the dress code regardless of their beliefs.
