Blinken's visit to Israel is over; what was agreed upon?

According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, it is clear that Israel is willing to make "big compromises" in order to reach a truce and hostage release agreement with Hamas, and that Hamas now bears the responsibility for ensuring its implementation.

"It is clear they would like to see that happen," Blinken says of Israel's desire to reach an agreement.

He says of the agreement: "It gets an immediate ceasefire, it gets hostages home, and it gives us something to build on."

As he did throughout the day, he urged Hamas to accept the most recent cease-fire and hostage-release agreement proposed by Israel. In that proposal, Israel has made “very important compromises” that “demonstrate its desire, willingness” to get the deal done, he said.

"This is something the entire world is watching," he explained. "If Hamas truly cares about the Palestinian people and wishes to see an immediate relief of their suffering, it will accept the deal. If it doesn’t, I think that’s further proof that it doesn’t care a bit.”

Blinken stated that his goal in talks with Netanyahu and other officials Wednesday was to secure a halt to the fighting, release hostages, and possibly parlay a pause in hostilities into a more lasting peace.

"There is an agreement that if we can get the deal, the cease-fire, and the hostages out, we will look for ways to build on that and have something long-term," he said.
