Religious freedom is systematically violated in Iran

In 2023, religious freedom in Iran remained extremely fragile, with protests against mandatory hijab laws and other restrictions on freedom of religion or belief persisting despite violent repression by security forces.

This was stated in the annual report of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.

In its report on the stage of religious freedom in the world in 2023, the organization recommended that the US government place Iran among “countries of particular concern” due to systematic and egregious violations of religious freedom.

"The US government should grant the necessary permits for financial and technical support to Iranians seeking religious and ideological freedom through peaceful demonstrations and trade union strikes," the agency demanded.

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom is an independent agency of the US federal government that was established in 1998 under the International Religious Freedom Act.

The purpose of this commission is to promote human rights in religious freedom as a key component of US foreign policy.
