Amnesty International made an appeal to Iran for the Azerbaijani scientist

Amnesty International has written to Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the head of the Iranian judiciary, regarding Ahmadreza Jalali, an Iranian-Swedish citizen currently detained in Evin prison.

The petition stated that the scientist's arrest, trial, and death sentence were unfair, and the Tehran government was asked to treat him with dignity, not torture him, and to release him immediately.

The international organization urged Swedish citizens to step up their efforts to free Ahmadrza Jalali.

It should be noted that the Azerbaijani scientist was arrested in April 2016 after traveling to Iran to attend a scientific conference at the invitation of Tehran and Shiraz Universities.

In September 2017, the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced him to death on charges of "spying for Israel," which was later upheld by Iran's Supreme Court.

Ahmadrza Jalali began a hunger strike on June 15 to protest his name not being included in the Iranian-Swedish prisoner exchange.
