Iranian workplace death statistics revealed by officials

In the first five months of the current solar year (March 21–August 21), 674 people in the province of East Azerbaijan lost their lives and sustained injuries in workplace accidents.

Information about this was shared by the provincial Medical Expertise Center's head, Mehrdad Sitara.

He said that 635 people—21 of them women—were injured and 39 people died as a result of the accidents.

"19 people fell from a height, 10 people were hit by a hard object, 5 people died as a result of electric shock, 2 people died from lack of oxygen in the work environment, and 3 people died as a result of burns," was reported.

Independent unions and class activists argue that the Center for Medical Examiners' figures are misleading.

According to them, the number of deaths and injuries is many times higher than the official figures.

Activists blame the increase in deaths on the failure to enforce safety rules in most workplaces, particularly in the construction industry, as well as the failure to provide workers with protective clothing and equipment.
