As part of a campaign against organizations associated with the Iranian regime, the German interior ministry announced the deportation of a person believed to be a representative of Iran's Supreme Leader.

The leader of the Islamic Center of Hamburg, Mohammad Hadi Mofatteh, was told to leave the country after officials closed it down in July for encouraging extremist Islamism. After a German court denied his urgent appeal to stay, Mofatteh departed the nation late on Tuesday.

His departure occurs just over a year after an Iranian cleric living in Berlin was banished for similar reasons.

Senator Andy Grote of Hamburg's Interior Department said, "With the deportation of the former director of the Islamic Center of Hamburg, we have removed one of the most prominent Islamists from our country," characterizing the removal as a step in the right direction for Germany's security.

German federal police conducted a search of the Islamic Center's grounds in November 2023 due to concerns that it was providing support to Hezbollah, a Lebanese organization backed by Iran.
