William Burns, the director of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), believes that regional tensions in the Middle East conflict are likely to worsen in the coming weeks.
Speaking at a conference in Georgia (U.S. state), Burns stated that, while the leaders of Israel and Iran do not want a large-scale war, the risk of escalation remains high.
The conflict continues despite the escalation of hostilities between Israel and the Hezbollah organization in Lebanon, as well as Iran's most recent missile attack on Israel.
"We see the potential for unexpected clashes and misunderstandings that could have serious consequences," Burns said, emphasizing that the most important task for the US is to prevent the situation from escalating further.
Burns also stated that Israel's decision on how to respond to Iran's missile attack will have significant implications, including for global markets.
