South Azerbaijani activist sentenced to prison

Mohammadreza Khalili, 22, of Khalkhal, South Azerbaijan, received a one-year prison sentence.

The 18th department of the Rasht City court reportedly charged the young people from Azerbaijan with "inciting citizens to massacre and conflict."

On November 15, 2023, M. Khalili was taken into custody following the start of a social media petition titled "Astara's integration into Ardabil province."

On December 8, 2023, he was granted temporary release pending trial, with a 2 billion Iranian tomans bail. It should be mentioned that the distances between the cities of Ardabil and Rasht, the provincial center of Gilan, are 70 kilometers and 200 kilometers, respectively, from the city of Astara.

It should be noted that the city of Astara is located approximately 200 kilometers from the city of Rasht, the center of Gilan province, and 70 kilometers from the city of Ardabil.

Azerbaijani Turks make up the majority of the city's population, and up until this point, locals have launched multiple campaigns and petitions calling for the reunification of Astara with Ardabil province.
