Lake Urmia, one of Azerbaijan's largest lakes and an important habitat for a variety of plant and animal species, is on the verge of disappearing due to the construction of 23 dams and poor water resource management.

Lake Urmia now contains only 10% of its original volume. Such a drop in water level has serious ecological and economic consequences, endangering the lives of millions of migratory birds and local residents.

It should be noted that the construction of 23 dams in Lake Urmia's catchment area has been a major contributor to its drying up.
