The special rapporteurs criticized Iranian authorities for violating Baha'is' rights, imprisoning them, confiscating their property, and persecuting them because of their religious beliefs.

The authors of the statement highlighted the systematic oppression of Baha'i women and demanded the release of imprisoned Baha'is. This comes two days after an Iranian court sentenced ten Baha'i women to a combined 90 years in prison.

The Revolutionary Court of Isfahan has accused ten Baha'i women of "propaganda against the government," "insulting the leader of Iran and the founder of the revolution," and "participating in missionary activities contrary to Islamic law," in the latest development in the ongoing pressures on the Baha'is.

It should be noted that, despite the fact that there are over 300,000 Baha'is in Iran, the religion is not officially recognized by the Iranian constitution.

According to a decision made by Iran's Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, members of the Baha'i faith are denied citizenship in the country.
