The circumstances surrounding South Azerbaijani lawyer and activist Taher Naghavi, who is detained in Evin prison, have drawn the attention of Mary Lawlor, the UN special rapporteur on human rights defenders.

Mary Lawlor wrote on the X social network that "imprisoned lawyer and activist Taher Naghavi is being denied hospital treatment and placed with dangerous prisoners, raising serious concerns for his safety, which must be ensured by Iran."

The prison authorities prevented Taher Naghavi from being taken to the hospital and having a medical examination because he was dressed in prison clothes and refused to wear handcuffs.

This is the second time prison officials have prevented him from being transported to a hospital.

Azerbaijani lawyer, who was arrested by security forces on February 17 of last year, transferred to Evin prison, and has been in temporary detention for nearly 9 months, was recently sentenced to 6 years in prison by the 15th branch of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.
