The United Kingdom government imposed new sanctions on Iran on Monday for sending ballistic missiles and other weapons to Russia to support the war against Ukraine.

This was reported by the "Voice of America".

The Iranian national airline and its state-owned shipping company that assisted in the transfer of weapons would have their assets frozen, according to the Foreign Office. Britain announced that the state-owned Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) would have its assets frozen due to its involvement in providing Russia with weapons to use against Ukraine.

Britain will also sanction the Russian cargo ship Port Olya-3 that delivered the missiles from Iran.

“Iran’s attempts to undermine global security are dangerous and unacceptable," Foreign Secretary David Lammy said in a statement in advance of announcing the sanctions at the U.N. Security Council. “Alongside our international partners, we were clear that any transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia would face a significant response."

The announcement was made the day after U.S. President Joe Biden gave Ukraine permission to use Washington-provided missiles to launch an attack deeper inside Russia, and on the eve of the 1,000th day of the conflict in Ukraine.

At the G20 meeting in Brazil, Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared that "we need to double down" in order to continue supporting Ukraine for as long as it takes.

According to the office, the asset freezes will limit Iran Air's capacity to provide direct flights to and from the UK and prohibit UK individuals or companies from conducting financial transactions with those organizations.

The measures come after Britain, Germany, and France announced a previous round of sanctions against Russia and Iran in September.
