Ali Mohammadi, an ecologist and environmental specialist, provided the most recent information regarding the ecological issues facing Lake Urmia.

According to the ecologist, "apple orchards, which have no buyers, receive the majority of the agricultural water of the Lake Urmia water basin of Western Azerbaijan province."

Furthermore, he noted that the province's failure to employ contemporary irrigation techniques contributed significantly to the lake's drying up.

In addition to the economic consequences, Ali Mohammadi stated that the drying up of Lake Urmu has a detrimental effect on the health of the local population. He also cautioned that the salt storms that rise from the lake's dry bed will force residents of the surrounding areas to migrate.

It should be mentioned that the most recent data indicates that Lake Urmia has a water volume of 1 billion 170 million cubic meters, even with the recent season's rains.

The ecological area of Lake Urmia should be at least 4635 square kilometers, with a minimum ecological water volume of 15 billion cubic meters and a maximum ecological water volume of 30 billion cubic meters.
