The extensive discussion of the topic stems from Abolhasan Mahdavi, a member of the Iranian Council of Experts and Friday imam of Isfahan, who stated that the candidacy of three people for the term following the religious leader was approved based on Khamenei's request and instructions.

According to Iranian Telegram channels, following Donald Trump's election as president of the United States, Khamenei gathered the members of the Council of Experts and discussed the issue of who would succeed him as Iran's supreme leader. In his speech to the 88-member Council of Experts, Khamenei stated unequivocally that the issue of succession would arise sooner or later, and that council members should consider it now.

He stated that it is necessary to gradually prepare society for this. The identities of the three chosen individuals are not revealed. However, Iranian experts claim that Khamenei is preparing his son Mojtaba to succeed him as supreme leader. It should be noted that Mojtaba Khamenei's relations with Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian are not particularly warm.
