The Special Clerical Court in Mashhad sentenced Maulana Fathi Muhammad Naqshbandi, the Imam of Friday prayers in Rask, to five years in prison following his 462-day incarceration at Vakilabad Prison.
On August 20, 2023, Maulana Abdul Ghafar Naqshbandi's father, Maulana Naqshbandi, was taken into custody while traveling from Rask to Chabahar.
There was a long period of uncertainty about his fate and whereabouts. For six months, neither his family nor the general public knew anything about his condition or the location of his detention.
It took six months for Maulana Sorkohi, a fellow cleric, to be able to visit him in Vakilabad Prison.
The Baloch cleric's detention sparked widespread concern, and many Sunni scholars took to the Friday prayer pulpits and other gatherings to demand his release.
Despite public outcry, Maulana Naqshbandi's legal battles led to his recent conviction.
The revered cleric and his family have been dealing with legal and personal issues for more than a year, and the Special Clerical Court has sentenced him to five years in prison.
The Supreme Court has now upheld the sentence, indicating that the government will continue to take its position on the issue.
