Hezbollah Lost 4,000 Fighters in the Past Year

According to three sources familiar with Hezbollah's operations, who cited previously unreported internal estimates, the group believes the number of its fighters killed during the 14 months of hostilities could reach several thousand, with the vast majority killed since Israel went on the offensive in September.

According to one source, the Iran-backed group may have lost as many as 4,000 members, which is significantly more than ten times the number of people it lost during its month-long 2006 conflict with Israel. Without making a distinction between combatants and civilians, Lebanese authorities have reported that 3,800 people have been killed in the ongoing fighting.

Hezbollah emerges shaken from top to bottom, its leadership still reeling from the killing of its former leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and its supporters made homeless en masse by the carpet bombing of Beirut's southern suburbs and the destruction of entire villages in the south.
