Russia and Iran share responsibility for Assad's crimes

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated on Monday that Russia and Iran were complicit in the crimes committed by deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and that his downfall demonstrated that they were "untrustworthy partners."

The Secretary General of NATO emphasized that Russia and Iran share responsibility for the Syrian conflict.

"The Assad regime was primarily supported by Russia and Iran, and they bear some of the blame for the crimes against the Syrian people," Rutte stated.

"They also showed themselves to be untrustworthy allies, leaving Assad when he was no longer useful to them."

The end of Assad's reign "is a moment of joy but also uncertainty for the people of Syria and the region," according to the head of the Western military alliance.

"A peaceful handover of power and an inclusive political process led by Syrians are our goals," Rutte stated.

"We will be closely monitoring the rebel leaders' behavior throughout this transition. In addition to protecting civilians and respecting religious minorities, they must enforce the rule of law."
