Iranian official: In Georgia, the Turkish language has surpassed the Persian

"Georgian has a common root with Persian and contains over 3,000 Persian words, indicating a long history of contact between the two peoples." Iran's cultural adviser in Georgia, Mehdi Saadatnejad, made this claim.

The Iranian official voiced discontent with the Georgian government, saying, "After the Soviet Union collapsed and Georgia gained its independence, favorable conditions were created for the spread and teaching of the Persian language in this country, but the political changes initiated by the official Tbilisi since 2008 have prevented this."

Iran opened four schools in Georgia sixteen years ago to teach and propagate the Persian language, but Saadatnejad acknowledged that the Georgians did not like it. He said that a number of initiatives were planned to boost interest in the Persian language.

The cultural adviser expressed concern about Turkey's influence in Georgia, claiming that foreign TV series, particularly Turkish TV series, have led to the study of other languages, including Turkish, rather than Persian in this country.
