Iran intends to send arms to Hezbollah via Beirut airport

Following the overthrow of Syria's Assad regime, Iran is considering converting Beirut International Airport into a new smuggling hub, supplying weapons to Hezbollah by air, according to the Times of London on Monday.

"Western countries are concerned that Iran is attempting to use Beirut airport after losing Damascus, the main transit point for arms smuggling in the region," the newspaper reported.

For years, Iran, along with Russia, Bashar al-Assad's main ally, has provided military assistance to the deposed Syrian dictator.

During the civil war, Damascus allowed Tehran to operate freely in Syria, smuggle weapons, and launch direct attacks on Israel in exchange for sending weapons and militias to quell opposition to Bashar al-Assad.
