Local eco-activists reported on this.

Officials confirmed the problem after it was made public on the social media platform. Hasan Gasimpour, the head of Ardabil province's Environmental Protection Organization, stated that the problem was caused by the release of diesel fuel into Shorabil Lake.

"After the investigations, it was discovered that diesel fuel was released from the production facility near the Shorabil canal reservoir, causing an unpleasant odor to spread," he stated.

It should be noted that Shorabil, Iran's only inland natural lake, is an important tourism destination in Ardabil province and holds special significance in terms of natural heritage.

The lake, located 3 kilometers south of the city, is 1 kilometer long, 500 meters wide, and covers a total area of 180 hectares at an elevation of 1350 meters above sea level. Geological studies indicate that Lake Shorabil is older than Lake Urmia.

This lake was added to the list of Iranian national monuments in June 2023.
