Regions of West Azerbaijan province face water shortage

Seven of West Azerbaijan province's 20 districts, including Urmia, Khoy, Salmas, Shot, Maki, Bukan, Piranshahr (Khana), and Sardasht, are experiencing a drinkable water shortage, which is expected to worsen over the summer.

This was reported by Mohammad Ashrafi, the head of the provincial Water and Sewerage Company.

According to the information, a lack of drinking water and agricultural water is forcing some residents of the aforementioned regions to relocate to other areas.

The number of villages in the region has increased, owing to a sharp decrease in agricultural profitability caused by water shortages.

It should be noted that the depletion of groundwater resources has caused additional environmental problems in the region, such as increased land subsidence.

Land subsidence is a serious problem in West Azerbaijan's Urmia, Khoy, and Salmas regions, but it has reached a critical level in the Salmas and Kahriz plains.
