Two years have passed since the terrorist attack on Azerbaijan's Embassy in Tehran, Iran.
On January 27, 2023, at 8:30 Baku time, the Azerbaijani Embassy was subjected to a terror attack when an Iranian citizen, Yasin Huseynzada, armed with a Kalashnikov rifle, broke through the security post and killed the embassy's head of security, Orkhan Asgarov. Security officers Vasif Taghiyev and Mahir Imanov were wounded while preventing the attack.
On January 30, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs evacuated embassy staff from Tehran, and the embassy's operations were suspended. Azerbaijan's State Security Service initiated a criminal case under relevant articles of the Criminal Code regarding the attack.
Orkhan Asgarov was buried in the Second Alley of Martyrs. On February 3, 2023, by presidential decree, Orkhan Rizvan oglu Asgarov was posthumously awarded the "For the Motherland" medal. Vasif Natig oglu Taghiyev was awarded the "Courage" Order First Class, and Mahir Kamil oglu Imanov received the "For the Motherland" medal.
After the incident, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran suspended its operations. Embassy staff and their families were evacuated from Tehran to Baku on January 29, 2023.
Following negotiations between the two countries, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran resumed operations at a new address on July 15, 2024, with the ambassador and staff returning to Iran.
The trial of Yasin Huseynzada, the perpetrator of the attack, lasted two years. Iran's Ministry of Justice announced that he was sentenced to death. Iran's Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence, and the case was transferred to Tehran for execution.
According to information, the court will invite the victims' relatives. If they demand the execution of the death sentence, the case will be transferred to relevant authorities for implementation.
