German police have busted a large cigarette smuggling ring that was manufacturing cigarettes in Iran and transporting them to European ports for sale.
This was reported by Hanover customs officials and the Bielefeld prosecutor's office.
According to the report, an international coordinated operation revealed an Iranian-linked smuggling network.
The operation resulted in the arrest of seven people in Germany, two in Belgium, and one in the Netherlands.
According to the report, the network's activities in smuggling and tax evasion cost European countries a total of 550 million euros.
Although it was reported that Turkish citizens were among the network's members, no further details were provided.
Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands launched an investigation to expose and dismantle the smuggling network in 2020.
This operation is regarded as one of Europe's largest cigarette smuggling discoveries, and it has the potential to severely damage the illegal tobacco trade.
