Karim Ismayilzadeh, a Turkic-Azerbaijani activist, was summoned to Department No. 15 of the prosecutor's office by phone without receiving official notification or appearing in court.
The Islamic Republic of Iran's laws stipulate that the charges must be formally communicated to the person and that summons to the prosecutor's office must be made via the "SANA" electronic system. But yesterday, the activist's family got a call telling them that Karim Ismayilzadeh needed to visit the prosecutor's office's Department No. 15.
Human rights activists consider this action a clear violation of the principles of a fair trial and assess it as a step taken to increase pressure on Azerbaijani civil society activists.
Furthermore, the Iranian government's security agencies have called a lot of Azerbaijani national movement activists to their offices in recent months. Many of them have refused to answer these calls, which is against the law, and have said they will not visit these institutions unless they receive a written summons from the officials.
