Iranian spy sentenced to heavy prison sentence in Israel

A 73-year-old Israeli named Moti Maman was sentenced to 12 years in prison for spying for Iran and planning to kill Israeli officials, including the prime minister and defense chief.

In light of Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza and its conflict with Iran's regional allies, the prosecution stated that "there is a vital need for deterrence" after a record number of plots backed by Iran were thwarted in the nation last year.

On his behalf, Maman's sons testified that he expressed regret and begged for forgiveness. According to his defense lawyer Eyal Basarglik, the sentence was "unfounded."

The businessman had entered Iran and met with agents who had instructed him to carry out operations in Israel.

Israel's Ynet claims that he did not pursue the terror operation because he had requested an advance of the funds that Iran would be responsible for paying.

Maman admitted to the charges during 14 Shin Bet interrogations and four more police interrogations, the prosecution claims.

"Throughout these interrogations, he revealed the extent of his crime to the investigators and consistently stood by his confession, enriching it with facts and details," the prosecution’s statement said.

Israel's Shin Bet intelligence agency reports that the number of arrests for Iranian spy plots increased 400% in 2024.
