Hakan Fidan warns Europe to get ready for Post-NATO era

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan urged NATO member states to “unite and create their own center of gravity,” describing Donald Trump’s policies as a “wake-up call” for European security.

The Financial Times interviewed Hakan Fidan.

“The actions of the American president are a wake-up call for us, the NATO member states. We must unite and establish our own center of gravity,” Fidan said in an interview with the Financial Times.

Hakan Fidan repeated that Türkiye wants to be part of any new European security architecture should NATO dissolve.

“The genie is out of the bottle, and there’s no way to put it back in: even if Trump decides not to withdraw troops from Europe at this moment, there is always the possibility that, in the future, someone with similar views and policies might consider reducing America’s contribution to European security,” Fidan warned.

His comments reflect growing concerns within NATO over the uncertainty surrounding U.S. commitments under Trump’s leadership and the need for greater European defense independence.
