Mohammad Khalilpur, the head of the City Council, reportedly protested this and forewarned the Kurds of the repercussions.

"These calls are quite irritating and we will respond with a shroud to those who describe this province as their own," he said.

Members of the Urmia City Council of Kurdish descent, Sadiq Tavakkuli and Sasan Ibrahimzadeh, proposed the idea to celebrate holidays in Urmia with Kurdish characteristics.

The city of Poldasht, which is on the border of Nakhchivan, was described as a Kurdish region during a holiday ceremony last week.

It should be mentioned that the propaganda-based holiday celebrations of the immigrants started a number of years ago under the control of Mohammad Sadiq Motamedian, a Kurd by nationality and the former governor of the province of West Azerbaijan.

Despite the appointment of Reza Rahmani, a Turk by nationality, as the province's governor, the "tradition" of claiming Azerbaijani lands, which started under Motamedian, is still in place.
