Kassym-Jomart Dokayev, the president of Kazakhstan, signed the law "On granting special administrative status to Turkestan" on March 3. The law will go into effect on March 15.

The Kazakh government hopes to preserve the city's historic architecture and the Turkestan region in the southeast of the country with this law.

As a result, Turkestan, which has a roughly 2,000-year history, was the first city in Kazakhstan to receive special status.

In compliance with the new law, the Kazakh government has also set stringent guidelines for construction inside the historical monument's boundaries in order to preserve Khoja Ahmed Yesavi's historic mausoleum in Turkestan.

It should be mentioned that Ahmed Yesavi's tomb is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
