"We are convinced that the terrorist attack on Azerbaijan was planned and executed with precision. It is claimed that this incident occurred for domestic, personal reasons. These claims are meaningless."
The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev during his speech at the international forum on "Towards a New World Order" held at ADA University, according GunazTV.
President Ilham Aliyev stated that Azerbaijan favors multilateral cooperation in response to a question about the Iran-Azerbaijan issue posed by a Great Britain representative attending the event. However, the relationship between the two nations is clouded by tragic events that have occurred in the region.
"As you know, a terrorist attack was carried out against our embassy in Iran. We cannot forget this tragedy. However, this terrorist incident occurred before President Pezeshkian. We are sure that the terrorist act carried out against Azerbaijan was prepared in an organized manner. It was alleged that this incident occurred on some domestic or personal grounds. These are meaningless allegations. That terrorist tried to enter our embassy for 40 minutes. The only person who resisted him was our embassy security officer. That officer was unarmed. The terrorist managed to kill 1 person."
According to President Ilham Aliyev, the terrorist who carried out the attack had a Molotov cocktail, a hammer, and a Kalashnikov assault rifle:
"All this was recorded by the external and internal cameras of our embassy. The police officers who were supposed to ensure the security of our embassy had fled the scene. It is possible that they fled out of fear, but why did they not inform the nearby police stations? I asked this question to our Iranian guests. Put yourself in my place, what would you think in such a situation?"
According to the head of state, the late Iranian Foreign Minister had pledged that the terrorist would face legal consequences and be subject to the harshest penalty. Nevertheless, the promise has not been kept even though two years have gone by since this incident:
"So far, despite the fact that 2 years have passed, the promise has not been fulfilled. After the terrorist incident, the terrorist gave an interview to the media. Imagine that a person who killed someone in the embassy of another country gives an interview to the state media. On that day, the terrorist is declared mentally ill. To call a person mentally ill, a medical examination is needed. This also takes a long time. And this person was immediately declared mentally ill. It has been 2 years since the court decision was announced. We know that in Iran, the death penalty is carried out in just a few days for minor crimes. Can we forget this incident? Of course not. This casts a shadow over our relations. I hope that the new government will fulfill the promises of the previous government. Not only the criminal who committed this incident, but also those who sent him to our embassy and those who stood behind him will be punished as well."
