The historical Old Castle monument in Khiyav (Meshgin), Ardabil province, will be destroyed if not restored, local cultural activists report.
According to the information, the historical fortress, which has been neglected and unprotected for many years, has sustained significant damage as a result of archaeological excavations by artifact smugglers and natural disasters.
After the issue became public, Khiva's governor (chief executive), Mehdi Bakhshi, stated that work is underway to restore the Old Fortress and that they intend to receive assistance from both the private and public sectors.
He stated that the restoration of the historical monument will have a significant impact on the growth of the region's tourism industry.
It should be noted that, while the Old Fortress, built in the third century, is on the list of Iranian national monuments, no funds have been allocated for its restoration to date.
