Iran replies to the United States regarding the Gulf's name

America's plans to rename the Gulf have drawn harsh criticism from Iran's Foreign Ministry, which described the action as politically motivated and an insult to all Iranians worldwide.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated in a post on X on Wednesday that the Persian Gulf name has roots in "centuries of history" and was accepted by all regional leaders and international organizations up until the 1960s.

“Politically motivated attempts to alter the historically established name of the Persian Gulf are indicative of hostile intent toward Iran and its people, and are firmly condemned,” Araghchi wrote.

Any such action, he continued, would have "no validity or legal or geographical effect" but would be strongly resented by Iranians worldwide, irrespective of their political beliefs or background.

The remarks coincide with rumors that US President Donald Trump might use the term "Arabian Gulf" when he visits Saudi Arabia, a move that Iran sees as a purposeful provocation.
