The situation of Lake Urmia remains critical, and only 440 million cubic meters of water have been released into the lake from the dams during the current water year.

This was stated by Hojjat Jabbari, head of the Environmental Protection Organization of Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province.

“Due to low rainfall this year, a sufficient amount of water has not been released into Lake Urmia. The amount of water released into the lake from East and West Azerbaijan provinces has been 440 million cubic meters, whereas the lake’s water requirement is 3.4 billion cubic meters,” he added.

At the same time, Mohammad Reza Aref, the first deputy of Masoud Pezeshkian, also stated that the ecological situation of the lake is dire.

He noted that the drying of the lake could affect not just a few provinces of the country, but the entire region.

Aref claimed that the government has allocated enough funds for the restoration of Lake Urmia and attributed the lack of improvement in the ecological situation to low rainfall.

It should be noted that the minimum ecological water volume required for Lake Urmia is 15 billion cubic meters, and the maximum is 30 billion cubic meters.

Currently, however, the lake holds only 1.55 billion cubic meters of water.
