Azerbaijan’s electricity exports to Turkey and Europe via Nakhchivan

As part of its renewable energy development plan through 2030, Azerbaijan aims to produce 6.5 gigawatts of clean electricity and strengthen energy exports to Turkey and Europe via the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

Azerbaijan intends to increase the share of clean energy to over 35% of the country’s total electricity production by 2030, aiming not only to meet domestic demand but also to expand electricity exports, especially to Europe.

In this context, Turkey is not only considered one of Azerbaijan’s primary electricity export destinations, but also a transit route for transferring energy to Europe. In particular, electricity exports from the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic to Turkey have become a top priority in bilateral cooperation.

According to Elnur Sultanov, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Energy, Nakhchivan’s renewable energy potential is estimated at around 6 gigawatts, with the possibility of exporting 1 gigawatt of that to Turkey.

Sultanov noted that the construction of a power station in Jabrayil will serve as the final link in the electricity connection between mainland Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan, which will be connected through the Zangezur or Aras corridor.

Due to differences in the power grid structures of Azerbaijan and Turkey, converter station construction has been prioritized, and feasibility studies are currently underway.
