UN human rights experts have called on Iran to immediately release Ahmadreza Djalali, an ethnic Azerbaijani Swedish citizen.

This call comes in light of the fact that Djalali, who has been held in Evin Prison since 2016, suffered a heart attack in May of this year, raising serious concerns about his life being in danger.

On June 5, UN experts warned that the detention of the political prisoner violates international law and that he is not receiving the necessary medical care.

“We reminded Iran that it is obligated to treat Mr. Djalali in accordance with human rights standards. The ultimate responsibility for ensuring humane detention conditions and providing medical care that meets public standards lies with the Iranian government. Unfortunately, Iran has not responded to previous appeals,” the UN human rights experts stated.

It should be noted that Ahmadreza Djalali, 53, originally from the Sarab region of Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province, traveled to Iran in 2016 at the invitation of Tehran University and Shiraz University.

He was arrested after participating in an academic conference in Tehran and was later sentenced to death on charges of “espionage.” He has been imprisoned for nine years.
