Trump: I’m no longer sure a nuclear deal with Iran is possible

In an interview with the “Pod Force One” podcast released on Wednesday, June 11, U.S. President Donald Trump said his confidence in striking a nuclear agreement with the Islamic Republic—and persuading Tehran to halt its uranium-enrichment program—has been waning.

Asked whether he still believes he can compel Iran to stop its nuclear activities, Trump replied: “I don’t know. I don’t know. I used to think so, but the more time passes, the less confident I become.”

He added: “It looks like they’re dragging their feet, and that’s truly regrettable. I’m now far less certain than I was just a few months ago that a deal will materialize. Something has happened on their side, but overall I think the chances are much lower than before.”

The president nevertheless stressed that he remains determined to prevent the Islamic Republic from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Commenting on whether China might be influencing Tehran’s resistance to American demands, Trump said he did not think that was the case.

He reiterated that Iran will not be allowed to acquire nuclear arms and concluded, “It’s better if this is accomplished without a war.”
