Iran is prepared to sign an agreement that guarantees it will forgo nuclear weapons, but it will not abandon its pursuit of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated.
“We are ready for any agreement aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. However, if the purpose of the agreement is to strip Iran of its legitimate rights to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, then we are not willing to accept it,” he said.
Araqchi added that during the sixth round of nuclear negotiations, Iran plans to present the U.S. with a proposed framework for a potential agreement.
It is worth noting that both U.S. intelligence and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have reported that Iran has enriched uranium up to 60%—far beyond what is needed for civilian use—bringing it closer to the threshold for developing a nuclear bomb.
