U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff announced that the U.S. and Iran have begun preliminary talks

U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff announced that the U.S. and Iran have begun preliminary talks—directly and through intermediaries—toward a comprehensive peace deal following a U.S.-mediated ceasefire.

The ceasefire came after joint Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, which Witkoff claims have set Tehran’s nuclear capabilities back by several years. He firmly denied reports suggesting the strikes failed to destroy Iran’s underground sites, calling such claims “preposterous.”

Witkoff emphasized that major Iranian nuclear sites at Natanz, Fordo, and Isfahan were heavily bombed with bunker-buster bombs and Tomahawk missiles, resulting in the destruction of critical infrastructure and most of the country’s centrifuges. He said this has made it nearly impossible for Iran to resume its nuclear weapons program in the near term. He also stated that the IAEA chief Rafael Grossi agrees with the U.S. assessment and is actively involved in the ongoing diplomatic process.
