Iran’s parliament passes bill to halt cooperation with UN nuclear agency

Iran’s parliament has passed a bill suspending cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, including inspections by its monitors.

Under the legislation, IAEA inspectors will be barred from entering the country unless national nuclear security is guaranteed, and any future access will require approval from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

The new measure applies to both safeguards-related and broader cooperation with the agency. The country's Supreme National Security Council now needs to give final approval to the move.

Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Baqir Ghalibaf claimed that Iran does not intend to create nuclear weapons: “The International Atomic Energy Agency has not fulfilled its duties and has become a political tool.”

Earlier, the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee called the IAEA report a pretext for an attack on Iran.

In its latest report, the agency criticized Iran for not cooperating with the agency, asked Iran to answer questions about undeclared nuclear facilities, and expressed concern about Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium.

According to experts, this step by the Iranian parliament could increase tensions with international nuclear agencies, the transparency of Iran’s nuclear program, and rise concerns about its regional and global security.
