Iran planned to mine the Strait of Hormuz

Iran was preparing to mine the Strait of Hormuz during the escalating conflict with Israel.

In June 2025, U.S. intelligence detected that Iran loaded naval mines onto vessels in the Persian Gulf, raising concerns that Tehran was preparing to blockade the Strait of Hormuz in response to Israeli strikes on Iranian territory. Although the mines were not deployed, their presence signaled a potential escalation that could have severely disrupted global oil trade — about 20% of the world’s oil and gas flows through the strait.

Iran’s parliament backed a non-binding resolution to close the strait after U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, but no final decision was made. The U.S. believes the move may have been either a genuine preparation or a strategic bluff.

Despite these tensions, global oil prices dropped, indicating that markets were relieved the strait remained open. The U.S. continues to monitor Iran’s actions closely, and while Iran’s retaliation was limited to a missile strike in Qatar, further escalation remains possible.
