Following the "Balamın Adı" campaign launched by Azerbaijanis regarding restrictions on Turkic names in Iran and their letter to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in this regard, M. Pezeshkian gave instructions to investigate the issue.
According to the organizers, an amendment to Article 20 of the Iranian Law "On Citizenship Registration" is required to ensure the right of parents to choose a name for their children.
It should be noted that the Iranian Registration Office's refusal to issue identity cards to Azerbaijani children with Turkic names is due to the fact that these names are not on the approved list of Iranian names.
According to the Registration Office, names that are not on the list are considered foreign names and contradict Iranian identity.
