Sakhavat Khairkhah, head of the West Azerbaijan General Department of Industry, Mining and Trade, said that according to exploration studies, the province has more than 54 million tons of gold ore, which is equivalent to 140 tons of pure gold.

According to him, these reserves can meet the country's (Iran's) need for gold for at least the next 70 years.

According to the information provided by the Abbas Lisani Information page, based on technical reports, the value of these reserves is estimated at more than $17 billion usd.

Currently, there are eight officially licensed gold mines in West Azerbaijan: three active mines (Zarshuran, Aghdara and Rabat mines), three mines with exploration certificates (Kharape, Arabshah, Al Quyun) and two mines currently under exploration (Gandoman and Zavakuh).

Although the West Azerbaijan province is one of the important gold-producing regions of the Middle East, this huge wealth is mainly transferred to the central treasury and the people of South Azerbaijan do not benefit from it.
