Residents of Verzigan are protesting the destruction of the environment.

Residents of the villages of Mesharo (Mashahir), Azimabad, Sivan, and Sohrun blocked the road to the mine on Sunday, September 7, 2025, in protest against the destruction and pollution of the environment, damage to daily life, destruction of livestock pastures, and the carelessness of officials and gold miners at the Andariyan mine (a Russian company).

According to the Ahar-Varzigan news channel, the exploitation of the Andariyan gold mine began in 2011, and since then, problems such as environmental pollution and the use of cyanide have begun to manifest themselves.

After 14 years of mining, it is still unknown how much gold the Russian side has obtained from this mine.

Alireza Novin, a representative of the city of Tabriz in the Tehran parliament, expressed his opinion on the issue of transferring this mine to foreign companies.

"Unfortunately, despite the presence of numerous mines in the Varzigan region, not enough attention has been paid to the city's infrastructure and improving services in the region," he said.
