We have known about the drying up of Lake Urmia since 1996.
This was stated by Isa Kalantari, Minister of Agriculture under former President Hashemi Rafsanjani and former head of the Iranian Environmental Organization, at a press conference.
He said that in 1996, Majid Javahiri, an advisor on water and soil issues, presented him with a report predicting that Lake Urmia would dry up by 2016.
The report clearly warned about the effects of the construction of numerous dams in the lake's watershed, and emphasized that government officials were aware of the consequences, but dam construction projects continued despite this information.
It should be noted that Kalantari's statement is of great importance, because government officials often tried to explain the drying up of Lake Urmia with issues such as climate change, drought and agriculture. Kalantari's words show that these claims of government officials are not true.
